The Phriendly Pheline Herself!
This is Phoebe on her sofa, in Michael and Lara's bedroom. She sleeps on the blue blanket, and likes to look
out the window while perched on top of the back of the sofa. Occasionally, she allows Michael to dump clothes
on her sofa. Michael finds this confusing, because this used to be his sofa. What changed?
Phoebe was an eight-year-old seal-point Siamese cat. Lara adopted her from the Toronto Humane Society when she was four months old.
Unfortunately, Phoebe developed secondary glaucoma and uveitis, a degenerative eye disease which caused a detached retina in her right eye, which she ulitmately lost. The disease
also affected her left eye, causing the lens to become diseased. The lens was eventually removed, and Phoebe's left
eye needed a regimen of eye drops twice a day to preserve what little sight she had left. It turned out that Phoebe
also had feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and feline herpes.
Phoebe was a good sport about it all. Sure, she didn't like the eye-drops, but she ddidn't take it personally. Within
moments of getting the last eye drop in the regimen, she was back to being a loving and affectionate cat.
Like most Siamese, Phoebe was graceful and athletic. Every move seemed to be over-dramaticized. Phoebe was
good at jumping up on things, despite her lack of depth perception. The few times she fell, she walked away with an
air of "I meant to do that, okay?"
Phoebe was always a happy cat, but she was less than pleased about Smokey Bob living in our house. We
didn't allow the two of them to come in contact with each other due to the fact that Phoebe is contagious,
but she could see him on the staircase, and she didn't like the fact that there is another cat on her turf. Either that,
or she had the hots for this handsome tom-cat (just check out that picture on his page within our site!).
In November of 2006 Phoebe developed a urinary tract infection and kidney problems which would plauge her for the rest
of her days. A year later the kidney problems worsened to the point where she needed fluids intravenously once a week,
then twice a week, then no amount of fluids would help. Phoebe finally lost her struggles with all of her health challenges
on February 8th, 2008. We miss her, but we also have fond memories of her.
